Shadow Shot Sunday #19

Howdy! Last Sunday the wonderful Paz suggested that we have a Shadow Shot Sunday button/badge for participants to display on their blogs if they wish to. Thanks for the idea Paz! So if you have a look in the sidebar you’ll see the SSS button I made this week. Feel free to use it if you participate. Even if you don’t participate and just enjoy looking at all the shadow shots people post, feel free to use it also. It’s there for anybody who would like it and wants to spread the SSS love! Players are under no obligation to display it by the way. I’m certainly not going to be offended if you don’t! Three Shadow Gallery collages this week featuring one photo from each participant from last Sunday. We’ve had a quite a few newbies join in over the last couple of weeks. Hello newbies! Thanks for playing! Anybody else wishing to join in, it’s easy. Shoot a shadow, post it on your blog on Sunday (or near enough to Sunday), add your link to Mr Linky, and visit other players. Have fun!

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #19

I spotted this shadow on my wall the other day and quickly grabbed my camera. The late afternoon sun sneaking in through the small window of the front door created a cool shadow of my fave lamp. I only wish I was quick enough to dust the lamp first. Ugh! I'm a terrible host. I apologise for that. I do make rather good coffee though. Happy Sunday!

Shadows in the Cinema

Yes, my obsession with shadows continues beyond Sundays! Currently on at the Qld Gallery of Modern Art is a very exciting film program running until the 30th November. It may be of interest to the Brisbane Shadow Shot Sunday players. Or not. And all the films are FREE! Which means more money left to spend on coffee and cupcakes at the GoMA Riverside Cafe. Woohoo!

Out of the Shadows: German Expressionism & Beyond

The Australian Cinémathèque presents a major retrospective season showcasing German film in an expressionist vein from the silent period onwards. In Berlin after World War One, a striking style of filmmaking developed that experimented with set design, lighting and shadow. These ‘expressionist’ films, rich in symbolism, played on images of madness, monsters and modernity. Ranging from classics to lesser known films setting the scene for the period, ‘Out of the Shadows’ includes Weimar musicals and comedies, classic film monsters, cities of the future, battles against nature, femme fatales, as well as recent films influenced by expressionist aesthetics. The program also charts the move of German directors to America in response to the rise of Nazism, their influence on Hollywood film production and on the development of film noir and horror genres - GoMA Website

Above images sourced from the GoMA website

To those who don't reside in Brisbane and are a little sad about missing out on this film program, I can do something that may make up slightly for your loss. I can eat an extra cupcake for you. Yup! I have such a big and generous heart! Off to polish my halo now. Please feel free to specify cupcake flavour preferences and I'll do my best to accommodate.

I've been tagged by Bec from The Small Stuff blog for the On Your Walls meme. I was only tagged two days ago and I'm responding already! Such a speedy response to a tag is a first for me! Actually, the fact that I've responded at all to a tag is a rare thing. It's not that I don't appreciate being tagged. It's just that I'm not very good at them. So please do forgive me if you've tagged me and I haven't followed through. This one is an easy peasy one because I'm able to cheat! Back in April I participated in Marilyn's Show Me Your Wall feature on Pulp Sushi. What's On My Walls now hasn't changed since April, so you can click here to view my walls over at Pulp Sushi if you didn't back then and you're interested in taking a peek now. Thanks for your interest in my walls Bec! If your interest extends to wanting to come on over to clean the accumulating cobwebs in the corners please don't hesitate to pop in anytime! Thanks also for sharing your walls! They're super sweet! I'll not tag anybody in particular but if you'd like to share what is On Your Walls please do! I'd love to see!

Shadow Shot Sunday #18

In 1981 the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution declaring an International Day of Peace. In 2001, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a new resolution declaring 21 September of each year as the International Day of Peace.

May Peace Prevail on Earth

Thanks again to the awesome shadow shooters for playing along! You all rock! If you’ve not joined in and would like to, it’s easy peasy. Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #18

Peace, in the sense of the absence of war, is of little value to someone who is dying of hunger or cold. It will not remove the pain of torture inflicted on a prisoner of conscience. It does not comfort those who have lost their loved ones in floods caused by senseless deforestation in a neighbouring country. Peace can only last where human rights are respected, where the people are fed, and where individuals and nations are free – The Dalai Lama

The Migrating Birds...

Time to announce the winner of my Make A Little Birdhouse in your Soul painting! Firstly, a huge thanks to all those who entered the giveaway. I so very wish that I could give you all something, but, well, I can't. Sorry about that. The randomly selected winning entrant is Tanya from TLS Creations. That was fun! I’ll have another giveaway sometime in the not too distant future. As this giveaway was to celebrate Spring, I’m thinking I’ll have a giveaway for each season. So expect the next giveaway in December to welcome in our Aussie Summer. So for now, congrats Tanya! As soon as I have your postal address the birdies below will be happily flying your way.

For anybody who may be terribly disappointed in missing out on the painting, you are certainly more than welcome to purchase one of my new mini bird painting fridge magnet thingies by way of consoling yourself. Yeah I know, I’m so thoughtful! I’ve made a big bowl of birdie canvas magnets. I’ve painted a bunch of teeny canvases (5cm x 7cm) using acrylics and have attached magnetic strips to the back. I’ve not yet photographed them individually, so hopefully tomorrow I’ll do that and then list a few in my Etsy shop. So check in there later if you’re interested.

Just following on from my Red post of last week, I was seeing a little more red yesterday and wanted to share it with you.

Yup. It is a little more red than I needed to see but I couldn’t resist taking a photo when I spotted it. By the way, that is a zoom shot. I’m not in the habit of getting THAT close to complete strangers to photograph their underwear. Really and truly I’m not! I sneakily snap target strangers from a distance. That’s socially acceptable behaviour isn’t it? Couldn’t be any less so than wearin’ your jeans half way down your arse. Enjoy the rest of your week and see you in the shadows on Sunday.

Shadow Shot Sunday #17

An astronomical object casts human visible shadows when its apparent magnitude is equal or lower than -4. Currently the only astronomical objects able to produce visible shadows on Earth are the Sun, the Moon and, in the right conditions, the planet VenusWikipedia

The following Shadow Gallery collages were compiled using one photo from each participant from last week, plus two photos from the SSS archives. If you’d like to participate, shoot a shadow (cast by an astronomical object or otherwise), post it on your blog on Sunday (or near enough to Sunday), add your link to Mr Linky, visit other players, and have fun!

I See Red! Red! Red!

I was seeing red today. Here are some snapshots…

An old sign I like in the Brunswick Street Mall. It’s red. It says coffee. What’s not to like about that.

Fatboy’s Café. Red chairs and an all-day breakfast menu. $4.00 for bacon, sausage, grilled tomato, toast & perfectly cooked eggs. One of the best breaky deals in BrisVegas.

I do not like cranes. I do at least like that this one is red.

Grover: Oh, I really like your red fur.
Elmo: And Elmo really likes your blue fur, Grover.
Grover: Oh that’s very kind of you Elmo, but I really like your red fur.

Oh just go get a room you crazy muppets.

Shadow Shot Sunday #16

Welcome to the Father’s Day edition of Shadow Shot Sunday! Not that SSS differs this week to any other, it just so happens to be Father's Day today. Father’s Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide but here in Australia and in New Zealand it’s always celebrated on the first Sunday of September. While on the subject of fathers, I just read a beautiful post on The Silly BooDilly blog that Victoria had written about her dad. If you’ve not read it I encourage you to do so as it’s really very touching and lovely. It brought a little tear to my eye. Well, a happy Father’s Day to all the Aussie and New Zealand dads today! Especially to my dad! Love you dad! Not that my dad reads my blog. I’m not sure my dad even knows what a blog is. Now shifting the focus away from the dads and onto the shadows! The Shadow Gallery collages feature photos from participants from last Sunday and also a couple of shots from the SSS archives that hadn’t been collaged. If you’d like to participate in SSS, shoot a shadow, post it on your blog on Sunday (or close to Sunday), add your link to Mr Linky, visit other players, and have fun!

September Giveaway!

I mentioned last week that I would be having a giveaway in September and I'm now all set to go. I guess there was some benefit to having the flu after all. Having a bunch of days off work & being housebound gave me some time to paint something for my 'spring themed' blog giveaway. Yes, it's now spring! Winter is officially over! Yay! With winter over I'm wondering what I'll now constantly moan about. Fear not folks, I'm sure I'll think of something! The painting I'm giving away is an original acrylic on a 10 x 10 inch (25.5 x 25.5 cm) chunky canvas stretcher. It's been given a protective matte finish. It's called Make a Little Birdhouse in your Soul. Yes, I've been listening to They Might Be Giants a lot lately. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed this band!

I got a little carried away with the adding of the birds. I hadn’t intended to include that many but I was having fun and just kept going. And going. I was aiming for a cheery and chirpy spring kind of vibe and hope I’ve achieved that. If you’d like to win this painting to hang on your wall, or in your tree, or around your neck if you’re into weird big birdy bling, then simply leave a comment saying so. You have until Tuesday 16th September to enter and then I’ll randomly select a name the following day and announce the winner here on Wednesday 17th September. Please ensure that you leave a way for me to be able to contact you should you win. Anybody can enter this giveaway as I’m more than happy to post the painting overseas. Good luck!

"Every year, back comes spring, with nasty little birds yapping their fool heads off and the ground all mucked up with plants"
- Dorothy Parker

Ok then, it seems not everybody shares my enthusiasm for spring. Grouchy ol' Dot!
