Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #58

A couple of water fountain shadows. I caught them joyfully dancing. To the tune of what I'm not sure.

I received this cool award from talented Sydney artist Sam of Matou en Peluche (Plush Tomcat) blog. Thanks Sam! Here's a small sample of Sam's gorgeous retro-art deco inspired charcoal & pastel drawings.

Pop over to Sam's Etsy Shop to view many more of her beautiful prints. And great news! Sam is currently having a 3 for 2 winter solstice sale. I'm not a fan of winter but this news has suddenly made it sweeter!

I also received the 'Love Ya' award from BrisStyle buddies Amanda (Twinkle Star Art) and Ali (Charlie & Grace). Thanks heaps guys! As I've already received this award I shouldn't accept it again but I wanted to say thanks anyway. And it gives me a perfect excuse to show off some of the lovely items Amanda and Ali have available in their shops! Oh and BrisStyle team members are having their very own market next week! You'll find details at the end of this post. If your finger hasn't dropped off already from all of the scrolling...

A selection of Amanda's adorable childhood inspired illustrations. Many more prints are available here.

You can find more cool creations by Ali here (for big folk) and here (for little folk)...so so cute!

The upcoming BrisStyle market is shaping up to be THE BEST MARKET EVER! If you live in, or anywhere near Brisbane you'll not want to miss it. With approximately 50 talented local artists and crafters selling their wares there promises to be something to appeal to all tastes. Even yummy cupcakes! And great coffee! And live music! For further info and a full list of participating stallholders check in on the BrisStyle blog.

Handmade heaven in Hamilton!

My sincere apologies for the length of this post. I do generally try to keep the focus of Shadow Shot Sunday posts on the shadows and save other things for posting during the week but it doesn't always happen that way. As computer time will be very limited for me this week I don't think I will be back blogging again until next SSS, so I've basically crammed two posts in one here today. Have a super week ahead everybody. xox

Happy Sunday!

Universal Peace Tour

Last Friday I attended the unveiling of the Jade Buddha. The Jade Buddha for Universal Peace is the largest Buddha carved from gemstone quality jade. It was created from a rare boulder of translucent jade (called Polar Pride) which was discovered in Canada in the year 2000. The discovery was described as "the find of the millennium." The Jade Buddha for Universal Peace is currently exhibited at Reddacliff Place (NOT King George Square, as stated in all of the promotional material btw) and will be touring the rest of Australia this year, with Sydney being the next stop-over in early July. Here is the Brisbane unveiling as I witnessed it.

A colourful onlooker preferring to view the proceedings from a distance

Many speeches to sit through first. Waiting, waiting... Here we go. Ta da!

And here's another photo. Looks a little odd and futuristic from this angle...

This statue is truly a spectacular sight to see in person. The tour of the Jade Buddha commenced in Vietnam early this year and it will depart from Australia early next year to travel throughout America and Canada. Tour dates and locations can be found here. The aim of the tour is to inspire everyone who sees the Buddha to reflect upon peace. A fascinating short film on the making of the Buddha can be found here. I'd be keen to see photos of the Jade Buddha in various locations around the world. Hopefully somebody will start a Jade Buddha for Universal Peace group on Flickr. Maybe they already have? I'll go check on that.

And how adorable are these!?! I won this cute set of gocco printed blank notebooks from talented artist and designer Valerie of Cabin + Cub. I can often be found lurking around Valerie's beautiful blog and Etsy shop admiring her artwork, so I was very delighted to win these! Oh happy happy joy joy! Thankyou Valerie xo

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #57

Shadow stencils! I spotted some cool shadows surrounding a building in the City and before I'd even aimed my camera, security guards pounced on me! They said "you cannot take photos here because this is a government building, blah blah blah..." Fine. Whatever. I continued walking down the street and found the above interesting looking metal stencil-style sign shadow. I liked this one better than the others anyway.

To check out the most cleverly created shadows EVER, click here. They're incredible. Seriously. I was totally gobsmacked when I saw them. Thanks ever so much Elizabeth for letting me know about them!

The lovely Sandrine from Histoire de Soie passed this sweet award along to me this week. As I can't narrow down 8 blogs to pass it along to I'm going to pass it along to all Shadow Shot Sunday participants. Check this post of Sandrine's for info about this award if interested in following through on the rules. Let me know if you do! I enjoy reading lists more than making my own. I'm a terrible list-maker. Thankyou Sandrine! xo

Botanical Bumbling...

The study of plants is vital because they are a fundamental part of life on Earth, which generates the oxygen, food, fibres, fuel and medicine that allow humans to exist. Through photosynthesis, plants absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that in large amounts can affect global climate. Additionally, they are influential in the water cycle. A good understanding of plants is crucial to the future of human societies.
~ Excerpt from Wikipedia

Things would look very grim for the future of human societies if dependant on my knowledge of plants...

Pink ~ I have no idea what these flowers are called.

Red ~ I have no idea what these ones are called either.

Green ~ Leaves! ...but the name of the plant from which they sprout from I am clueless.

Yellow ~ Oooh I know this! Rosella! Named simply here as 'yellow' in keeping with my clueless colour theme

Why do people give each other flowers? To celebrate various important occasions, they're killing living creatures? Why restrict it to plants? "Sweetheart, let's make up. Have this deceased squirrel."
~The Washington Post

Here's an idea. Why not give a friend or loved one a flower photo print? Much sweeter than a dead smelly squirrel.

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #56

I've been bailed up at home most of the week with a nasty cold feeling too sorry for myself to go searching for shadows. These two are from the archives that were taken last month. I was all keen to shoot a bicycle shadow this week to tie in with World Naked Bike Ride, which happens to be this weekend. A crazy cycling event for a worthy cause but I dare not be participate due to still recovering from above mentioned cold.

With or without a cold I'm just not that brave.

Greenfest

Coinciding with both World Environment Day and Queensland Day was a three day event called Greenfest, which was presented by Brisbane City Council. Greenfest was held at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens from the 5th to 7th June, with over 200 exhibitors, 60 bands, 50 speakers, film screenings, art displays, and a range of fun workshops all aiming to help raise awareness about the importance of environmental sustainability.

Much loved Aussie actor Jack Thompson was one of the featured speakers opening the event

The Sunshine Reggae Band from Alice Springs entertaining the crowd

Enjoying the glorious afternoon sunshine and tunes provided by Perth band, Tame Impala

This obsessive gum leaf munching cutie tagged along with the Australian Koala Foundation crew

A well organised event and having the different sections spread around the gardens worked really well. All areas were only a short stroll away from each other, allowing plenty of room to freely move around without anywhere being overcrowded. And the Brisbane Botanic Gardens have never looked so good due to the recent rain Brisbane has experienced. Everything was beautiful, lush, clean and so very very Green!

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #55

Above are some striped shadowy folk working hard manning the Greenfest 09 Headquarters. I celebrated World Environment Day by attending Greenfest on Friday. I'll post more about the event during the week. It was brilliant. The last day of the festival is today, so if any locals haven't yet been it's not too late to go.

Also if looking for something else fun to fill in your Sunday, just around the corner from Greenfest is...

A bunch of fellow BrisStyle members are participating. Click here for more details about these markets.

And in other BrisStyle news, my buddy Amanda (Twinkle Star Art) has been on a creative sabbatical for the last two months and has now resurfaced and is celebrating the reopening of her Etsy Shop with a giveaway!

Click here for a chance to win one of these adorable art prints from Amanda's new Matryoshka Collection.

Chung Tian

Admiring the sculptures while strolling around the gardens of the Chung Tian Buddhist Temple last week.

"Knock on the sky and listen to the sound"
(a zen saying)
