Well, it’s been quite an eventful week here in Queensland. I’m sure most of you have seen footage on your TV of the devastation that the floods have caused. Queensland:
“the sunshine state” and
“beautiful one day, perfect the next” have been popular slogans of tourist campaigns of past. While those slogans may not paint an accurate picture right now, they will be relevant again. I’ve watched on television countless scenes of devastation in other parts of the world and it breaks my heart and seems all so surreal. To have it happen in your own hometown is even more heart breaking and surreal. But happen it does. And we deal with it. We rebuild. Not to make light of the loss of homes and businesses that many people are experiencing, but things can be rebuilt. It’s not the ‘things’ that make Queensland the great place it is. It’s not the fancy river walk structure that collapsed and floated down the Brisbane river, it’s not the iconic restaurants that have been ruined, it’s not the cute little inner-city workers cottages submerged in water up to their roofs, or the homes and businesses in regional Queensland that were once filled with character and charm, now filled with poisonous brown snake riddled sludge. And the list could go on and on. The loss of those things is horrible and so very traumatic for the people who have lost homes and possessions, but it’s the people that matter. Qlders built those things and Qlders will build them again. It’s the people of Qld that make Qld the great place it is. The strong, resilient, community minded, talented, creative, beautiful, humorous, and inspiring people of Qld that makes Qld shine and makes me so proud and feel so fortunate to be a part of this great state. Qld is my home because the people I share it with make it so. The sun has been shining for the last few days. We love Mother Nature when she is playing nicely, but she also plays dirty and nowhere in the world is immune to what she is capable of throwing at us. But the game isn’t over. Mother Nature hasn’t beaten us. She hasn't won. Not by a long shot. Qlders will rise above this. And may Mother Nature attempt to redeem herself by keeping that sun shining.
And another thing. Sorry this post is so long already but I really do need to touch on this from my previous post of thanks. Again, thanks from the bottom of my heart for your lovely messages of concern and thoughts and prayers. I've received such lovely messages from blogging friends, and friends from the Etsy community and other online places. It's so heart warming to know that people from all over the world care about us here in Queensland and take the time to reach out. Even complete strangers browsing Etsy who have stumbled upon my shop and noticed the location being Qld have sent sweet messages of concern for the people of this flood ravaged state. Strangers reaching out to strangers is a beautiful thing. I'm seeing it first hand happening around my own community but to experience it on a global level is amazing. To quote the Ben Lee song "we're all in this together" is exactly how I feel. Human kindness should never be underestimated as it's the most powerful thing in the world. We ache, you ache. You ache, we ache. Regardless of being separated by oceans, we are indeed all in this together because we are simply one big community. We have different names for the areas we reside in but that's kind of important for the postal workers. It makes their jobs easier and less confusing. It would be chaos if we addressed all mail to 'the world' but it is the same world we all live in. We're all neighbours. Neighbours who do deeply care for each other. So thank you. xo
