The Sunday Arts Program on ABC TV is inviting people to submit photos to their website for inclusion in their online art gallery. They are specifically seeking photos of public art in your community. Submissions are not restricted to Australian residents only. Public art from all over the globe is welcome. So if you have some interesting public art where you live why not take a photo, upload it and share. Or you may already have some photos of public art that you’ve taken while visiting other areas, so you could upload those. There is a lot of ‘commissioned’ public art around Brisbane but much of it doesn’t appeal to me. I often find the ‘non-commissioned’ public art more interesting. I took this photo of some stencil art I found in New Farm a while back & just uploaded it.

You probably can’t make out the Andy Warhol quote, but it’s one of my favourites of his. “Art is what you can get away with”...and it is indeed Andy!

I'd like to wish you American folk a very happy Independence Day!

Enjoy your 4th of July celebrations, whether it be BBQs in the backyard with friends & family or bikini-clad frolicking in the ocean while twirling pretty polka dot umbrellas. Have fun & stay safe!

love that quote from Andy - he had a lot to say and some of it was so spot on!! That's a great little segment of public art too - very 'iconic'!
love that stencil art!

and the andy warhol quote is great, such an inspiring thing for someone to stencil on a public wall.
Looks like that will be an interesting online gallery. Most of the public art I've seen in the town closest to me has been large, bronze and equine. Not my cup of tea.

Thanks for the 4th of July wishes. I need to find my polka dot umbrella...

forgive me for souding completely clueless and stupid here: Public art? Is that Graffiti? Or is it a public wall or structure that people are allowed to paint on??
You always put a smile on my face! I can see me bikini clad with a polka dot umbrella...haha. Interesting quote. Is the stencil art graffiti? I've not notice that being done here. In my little podunk of a town the only art we have is the graffiti on the passing trains. I could send in a picture of that and tell them the latest "traveling art exhibit" didn't stay long enough! It is cool to look at...wondering who the artist is and where they did their work.

You don't sound clueless or stupid. 'Public Art' may go by another name in America. Or it may not even be very popular over there. Public art generally includes community projects, murals, outdoor sculpture etc. It's very big in Brisbane, Queensland & the Queensland government has even set up funding for public art projects to the amount of $12 million dollars. We've gone public art crazy! Graffiti/stencil art is public art in that it is created in a public space to be viewed by the public. It's not generally funded/commissioned & rarely permitted or legal though. It sometimes is, but not often. Hope my wishy-washy attempt at an explanation helps :)

I find it interesting that someone would actually stencil art onto a public place, (which looks pretty cool) here in the states it's usually their "own" art which is considered graffiti. My take on public art or/and graffiti is exactly the same as Andy Warhol...“Art is what you can get away with”... thanks for posting that Harriet! And thanks for the web link!

Love the 4th of July card ! We're keeping our fingers crossed for some beautiful weather on the 4th!

i hve to say, i totally love Andy Warhol!!!!! The street art gallery sounds really cool and I really think I will participate in it. I really believe that street art is so important in a world of everything having a price tag.
I would much rather see someone's expression than plain old concrete. I would love to see in one gallery of it from around the world. We used to read a magazine about street and sticker art, but I cant remember the name. shoot.

happy 4th to you too! we are goin camping!!! yayyayyay!

Thanks for the holiday wish - we'll have lots of fire works this weekend and picnics with potato salad, hot dogs and hamburgers. Great Warhol quote. My "fifteen minutes of fame" - another one of his quotes were when I did a photo shoot for a German client with Andy piggy back on my back. We were in Paris at the time but unfortunately he died three weeks later during surgery. He did have a great philosophy when it came to art.

Love the quote and like you, I find the public art, non-commissioned type, the most fascinating.

I'll be celebrating the 4th on the roof on a Warehouse condo ~ watching the "Battle of the Barges" in New Orleans. Love to see the Fireworks!

Love that Ghostbuster stencil. I'm off to check out the online gallery now. What a great idea. Oh, I wonder how much Banksy stuff is going to turn up there - I'd love to see some of his stuff in person!
