I visited the South Brisbane Cemetary (aka Dutton Park Cemetary) early in the week to take some shadow shots with a halloween theme in mind. You know, with halloween falling right on Shadow Shot Sunday this year and all. Ok, ok, I realise these photos are not the least bit scary. Not really. But hey I bet this cemetary is super creepy at night! Especially when the regular Ghost Tours are operating within the place. Maybe one day I'll summon up the courage to join one of those Ghost Tours. Probably not though. I'm a bit of a scaredy cat...

Join the Wordless Wednesday fun with Faith Hope & a Whole Lotta Love

a bit of stylin' up

This is something I purchased from a vintage/retro collectables store many years ago. It was labelled as a '1960s interactive art piece - artist unknown' and the interactive parts of the piece are simply those red and white panels that slide in and out and can be changed around. Now years later since the purchase and three houses down the track I had this idea to fill up the blank panels with mini artworks. The plan was to fill it with mini artworks/photos created by other people but as I don't currently have enough on hand I've used all my own photos. Which feels kind of weird because I've never displayed my own art/photos in my home before. So anyway, after some quick calculations I went about cutting up 48 of my TtV photos into ACEO sizes (2.5 x 3.5 inches) and tada...





And after all that I've decided that I prefer the look of the piece as it originally was purchased. Bugger. I'll leave it as it is for now due to the time I spent on cutting up all those photos, and with any luck it may yet grow on me. Although I suspect in the not too distant future a new section will likely be added to my etsy shop called ACEO TtV Photo SALE with 48 items listed...

Here's my Shadow Shot(s) Sunday #127


Pretty shadowy reflections provided by the Photovoltaic Geodesic Dome (just try saying that quickly after a few glasses of wine!). This colourful installation is one of many outdoor artworks on display around the Cultural Centre as part of the Light from Light exhibition presented by the State Library of Queensland.


I believe this installation located in Southbank Parklands is also part of the same exhibition. It's huge! The size isn't obvious looking at this photo but I tweeted another photo of it HERE if interested in seeing a very different view of it.

My computer is running as it should be again, which makes me very happy indeed! As I was unable to visit any shadow shooters last week I didn't manage to copy shadow shots for the Shadow Gallery this week. My SSS post feels very naked without the ususal Shadow Gallery! All will be back to normal next week for sure. I missed catching up with everyione last week so I'm looking forward to visiting this week! And many thanks for all the well wishes with regards to my sick computer (which I almost threw out the window!). You guys are awesome!

This photo was taken in New Farm Park while standing in the shadows of the Jacaranda trees. I love the purple glow of the Jacarandas this time of year!

Some interesting info about the Jacarandas...
The University of Queensland in the city's inner west has a very high concentration of the tree, and due to the impressive display of purple flowers in mid-Spring, which wind up littering vast sections of the suburbs, local folklore claims that "one won't start studying for exams until the jacarandas have moulted". At Sydney University there exists a similar expression "by the time the jacaranda in the main quadrangle flowers, it's too late to start studying for exams". This has led to the slang name "exam tree" or "purple panic" being attached to the plant. At the University of Queensland students even maintain a joke superstition that if a Jacaranda bloom falls on their head during exam time, they will fail an exam. The bad luck can be broken by catching another bloom before it hits the ground. - [excerpt from wikipedia]

Apologies for there being no Shadow Gallery this week. I'm having some computer issues and it took the longest time to even draft this post as it was. I do hope to visit shadow shooters, but there is a chance that I may not be able to if the computer problem gets worse. I have my fingers crossed but I'm not optimistic and it's looking like my computer will need to visit the repair shop...

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #124


Wreck resting in the shadows. It appears to have been resting for quite some time! My shot this week was inspired by a segment I viewed on a TV program called Art Nation which aired last Sunday. The segment was about an exhibition called 100 Ways to Ruin a Car and was a collaboration between Sydney based photographer Alex Cyreszko and Brisbane based photographer Francesca Rosa. Here's a video of the segment if interested...


Did you watch? Cool huh? I also tracked down this newspaper story about the exhibition and the artists involved which I found interesting. You may too!

The car in my photo is an abandoned car in some bushland which I discovered a while back but didn't see it as anything but trash at the time. It wasn't until after learning about that photo exhibition that the trash suddenly became treasure. So I made my way back to the scene and was happy to find the car still there.
