Shadow Shot Sunday #28

Howdy! It’s been a while between posts. It’s just been one of those weeks. So many other things that I’ve needed to focus my attention on so I’ve had to neglect my blog a little. It will be more of the same this coming week also. I will always manage to find the time for the Shadow Shot Sunday posts. I’m too obsessed with shadows to skip them. Thanks to all the wonderful participants for indulging my obsession. I’d also like to mention that it hasn’t been a completely blog-free week for me, as I did a couple of posts over at the BrisStyle blog. So please feel free to pop on over anytime. We always enjoy visitors!

The four Shadow Gallery collages this week feature one photo from each participant from last Sunday. If you’d like to participate in SSS, it's easy peasy! Shoot a shadow, post it on your blog on Sunday (or close to Sunday), then add your link to Mr Linky at the bottom of this post, and visit other players. Have fun!

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #28

This is a small part of the Myer City store Christmas window, which is a popular Brisbane festive tradition now in its 53rd year. This year’s Myer window display is based on the book How Santa Really Works by UK author and illustrator Alan Snow. It is one of the best displays I’ve seen in years. I think my squeals of delight may have frightened the poor kiddies that happened to be there while I was merrily snapping away. I took so many photos but this was the only one that featured a prominent shadow. A bunch of the shots will be made into Christmas postcard sets for my little nieces. I did that last year with photos I took of the display and they seemed to like them. It will now be our new tradition. Our tradition may not however last 53 years. I am thinking my nieces will probably be well and truly over it long before then.

News Flash! Elizabeth (About New York and The House In Marrakesh blogs), a regular shadow shooter (and the inspiration behind me starting this Shadow Shot Sunday meme in the first place!) has just had published a most charming looking children’s book titled Jane in Winter and it is now available for purchase right here. Just in time for Christmas! Woohoo! Besides writing the book, the multi-talented Elizabeth was also responsible for creating the adorable cover art for it! Congratulations Elizabeth!

Description: The story of Jane Mabry, an ordinary ten year old girl who lives in a romantic gamekeeper's cottage on the estate of the once powerful Mabry family. Jane's life is transformed when she meets Mrs. Parsifal and her adventures begin. This is a story for children, but Anglophiles and those who grew up in the 1950's--or wish they did-- will relish a visit to a vanished world. Aimed at readers aged 8-12 but can be enjoyed by grown ups too - synopsis sourced from the Lulu website

Take care, stay safe and see you next Sunday. Hoping you all have a wonderful week ahead!

Happy Sunday!

Shadow Shot Sunday #27

In ninja fiction, ninjas are supposedly able to become "one with the shadows" or, "a living shadow." In the manga, Naruto a special shuriken is named "The Windmill of Shadows." Also in Naruto, Shikamaru Nara possesses the technique to control a person's body movements once his shadow touches theirs. He can also manipulate his shadow into several shapes. Cool huh? I think I'd like to be a ninja!

The three Shadow Gallery collages this week feature one photo from each participant from last Sunday. If you’d like to participate in SSS, it's easy peasy! Shoot a shadow, post it on your blog on Sunday (or close to Sunday), then add your link to Mr Linky at the bottom of this post, and visit other players. Have fun!

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #27

Yeah I know I’ve posted shadow shots of these critters before. I can’t help it! I love these lizards, so whenever I see them I feel the need to stop and take photos. They don’t seem to mind at all either.

I’ll not waffle on like I usually do (and don’t think I can’t hear the sighs of relief!) because more severe storms have been forecast to hit Brisbane tonight. So it’s very possible that lengthy blackouts will again follow, so I’m quickly drafting this post while I can and scheduling it to publish early Sunday. For those who don’t know, Brisbane has been smashed with horrendous storms during the week. If by chance my house blows away, I’ll at least find a little comfort in knowing the shadow shots will continue as normal.

Funkadelic Art Show 08

Here’s another art exhibition opening this Friday night, the very same night as the Reverse Garbage one that I mentioned last week. I want to go to both! Aaaargh! The Funkadelic Art Exhibition will showcase artworks created by people with disabilities who are members of a social and recreational support organisation based on the Northside of Brisbane. This is an annual event, with the first exhibition being held back in 2004. I’ve attended each year and have been lucky enough to snap up some amazing artworks at very reasonable prices. The artists all create with a variety of mediums, so there’s always a great display of different types and styles of art. Paintings, drawings, photography, re-purposed furniture pieces, sculptures, photograms, jewellery, will all be on display and available for sale on the night. Here’s a sneak peak at a few of the artworks that will be featuring in the exhibition. Many thanks to the credited artists below for allowing me to photograph and display your artworks here on my blog! I ♥ your art!

Spiral of Shadows (acrylic on canvas) by Hayley Marrs

The Dark Side (acrylic on canvas) by Nicole Theodoras

Missing Bekim (acrylic on canvas) by Sarah Trudgian

The Funkadelic Art Exhibition opens on Friday 21st November at 7pm for one night only. So if you are interested in attending, head along to the Newmans Function Room, located upstairs at the Geebung-Zillmere RSL Club, Geebung. The evening will include an art auction of selected pieces, yummy nibblies and live music performed by the talented Scott Glennie. It promises to be a fun night out. Always are!

Shadow Shot Sunday #26

"Every picture has its shadows, and it has some source of light" - Joni Mitchell

In Peter Pan the main character loses his shadow. It snaps off when he leaps out of the window, which is slammed closed behind him. It is put in a drawer and later sewed back on by Wendy.

The three Shadow Gallery collages this week feature one photo from each participant from last Sunday plus a couple from the archives. If you’d like to participate in SSS, please do! How you may ask? It's easy peasy! Shoot a shadow, post it on your blog on Sunday (or near enough to Sunday), then add your link to the Mr Linky gadget found at the bottom of this post, and visit other players. Urban Wall-Capers (Part 3)

These are more samples of street art I found around the West End area recently. This last photo is of a cool piece of stencil art displayed in the window of Avid Reader Bookshop. Love that one! Partly due to my fondness for old clunky typewriters! The inclusion of the Mr Colour characters from the Reservoir Dogs film in the corner of the third photo I thought was an interesting addition.

An excerpt from Reservoir Dogs

Mr Pink: Look I ordered coffee. Now we’ve been here a long fucking time and she’s only filled my cup three times. When I order coffee, I want it filled six times.
Mr Blonde: Six times. Well, what if she’s too fucking busy?
Mr Pink: The words “too fucking busy” shouldn’t be in a waitress’s vocabulary.
Nice Guy Eddie: Excuse me, Mr Pink, but I think the last fucking thing you need is another cup of coffee.

(Apologies to those who are offended by swearing. I’m hoping my nanna doesn’t stumble upon this post)

Now onto something that my sweet nanna would wholeheartedly approve of. A favourite West End haunt of mine, Reverse Garbage, will soon be launching their popular annual end-of-year pre-Christmas exhibition. These are always fun events with so many amazing and unique art and craft pieces on display and available for sale. What’s particularly exciting about this one is that three of the participating artists this year are fellow BrisStyle team members. Included in the “Renaissance: a rebirth of recycled materials” exhibition are Helen Berthold (ruby red studios and ruby 2 go-go), Ali Chisholm (jellygnite) and Rebecca Hollis (wheresbeckybean). Congratulations on your successful submissions guys! I’m so very looking forward to heading along to this and checking out all of your creations!

"The exhibition will showcase both functional and decorative artworks made from 70% or more salvaged materials. The title ‘Renaissance’ was selected for its ‘rebirth’ and ‘renewal’ connotations. We’ve invited artists to breath ‘new life’ into discarded materials creating pieces perfect for ecologically sound Christmas presents" – blurb from the Reverse Garbage website.

Opens Friday 21st November at 6pm. If you’d like to attend the opening night celebrations simply RSVP by 14th November on 3844 9744. If you can’t make it along to the opening, fear not, as the exhibition will be continuing in the RG Echoes Giftshop during regular Reverse Garbage opening hours.

And I’ll plug the awesome BrisStyle Giveaway here again because it’s relevant to this post. Besides submitting pieces for the Reverse Garbage exhibition, Helen, Ali and Bec have also contributed super gifts to this awesome giveaway. So there’s another wonderful reason to enter! Which you can do so by clicking here if you haven’t already. Enjoy the rest of your week and see you in the shadows on Sunday!

Block-Head-Choc-Head

Eeeek! Panic is beginning to kick in. I now have less than a month to complete these canvases for an upcoming exhibition and this is all I’ve done so far. Prepared the backgrounds with vintage book pages (choice of pulp being Peanuts…no surprise to anyone who knows me!) and I’ve yet to add the paint. They are going to be paintings. Which of course means that they require painting. I have paint. I have brushes. I even have this very clear plan in my head of what I want to do. It’s just not happening. Why? Dunno. If I wasn’t in panic mode my brain would work properly and I’d be able to list a gazillion concise, yet extremely mundane reasons. Stress is a funny ol’ thing. Causing an inability to focus. Leaving one with an attention span of a flea. Is flea correct? It doesn’t seem right somehow. I think of fleas as being quite attentive little critters. Maybe I’ve read them wrong. Whatever. And performing the simplest of tasks becomes all too overwhelming. Even attempting to reply to text messages while on the bus was a complete impossibility. My hands failed to work and I kept dropping the phone. I gave up in the end. On the bus. On edge. Route #345. The crowds, the noise, the drunken Melbourne Cup Day revellers…

St dwn kd, y’r mkng m nrvs.

Today at least was made a little sweeter with the arrival of this Etsy purchase from Esme's Fudge. I LOVE homemade fudge and this is the first Brisbane Etsy shop that I've discovered to sell food items. Oh boy is this fudge yummy! 350 grams of hand whisked creamy milk chocolatey goodness! It was also wrapped and packaged so pretty in lovely fabric and ribbon and was sent fresh from the kitchen via overnight express post! I discovered this shop on Little Mary Moo's fab blog and I'm so glad I did!

Shadow Shot Sunday #24

Howdy! SSS #24 this week! That's about six months worth of shooting shadows. I think. I've never been very good at calculations. It's been fun! Except for a few of weeks ago when an odd man chased me away from his yard because he didn't appreciate me taking photos of his garage. There were awesome shadows cast across his garage and just as I stopped and took out my camera from my bag, the man came running out from inside his house to ask what I was doing. I told him I'm taking photos of the shadows on his garage. He asked me to leave his property. I wasn't actually on his property. I was standing on the footpath. He had the crazy shoo-shoo-away hand gestures going while asking me to leave. Like I was some nuisance dog about to pee on his precious petunias or something. Weirdo! The Shadow Gallery collages this week feature one photo from each participant from last Sunday plus one from the archives. If you’d like to participate in SSS, please do! It's easy peasy! Shoot a shadow, post it on your blog on Sunday (or close to Sunday), add your link to Mr Linky at the bottom of this post, and visit other players. Have fun!

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #24

This was my attempt at an arty shot of some hedge shadows. It was taken from inside one of the glass elevators at the Cultural Centre Busway. It was also taken a little higher up than intended because it was spontaneous and so I didn't have my camera ready when I was closer to the ground. And I was running late for the bus so didn't have time to ride the elevator again. I like that with a click of the camera one of my shoes instantly became a designer foliage patterned sneaker. Wish I had matching hedgies!

Just wanted to give you lovely shadow folk the heads up on an awesome giveaway about to be announced on the BrisStyle blog. Almost 20 members of the BrisStyle Etsy Team have contributed something to this. It’s huge! Superstar Bris-blog editor Bec (who can also be found here and here) has drafted the post and she’ll be hitting the publish button tomorrow. Tomorrow being Monday morning Australian time, which will still be sometime Sunday in America. Yes! The giveaway is open to overseas folk! So unless Bec happens to be abducted by aliens between now and tomorrow, the giveaway fun will shortly commence. Those crazy BrisStylers have recently given me access to the BrisStyle blog anyways, so should Bec be abducted by aliens overnight, I’ll pop in and hit the publish button myself. Then organise the search party for Bec. Priorities! So, cool free stuff will be happening. Rain, hail or shiny suspicious spacecrafts!

Happy Sunday!
