Gluttonous Gulls

Attempting to enjoy a nice, quiet and relaxing lunch of fish and chips by the beach at Redcliffe without being stalked by scavenging seagulls is near impossible. The decision to share your lunch with these birds is not always a wise one. Before you know it, every seagull within a three kilometre radius has got wind of the ‘free food’ and is hovering like a, well, vulture. It can be extremely daunting being surrounded by a mass of hungry squawking seagulls. It can also be a lot of fun if you happen to have a camera handy. Or two cameras in this case. Yes. You guessed it. More TtV (Through the Viewfinder) photos to share...

Lunch is over. All gone. I swear I have no more fish. Can you stop looking at me like that. Please?

These little greedy gulls and a bunch of other TtV photos have just been added to my etsy shop.

Seagulls: “Mine. Mine. Mine.”
Nigel: “Oh would you just shut up? You’re rats with wings.”

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #40

I spotted these shadows as soon as I entered the gallery space at the Museum of Brisbane and I ran towards them, fumbling in my backpack along the way for my camera. In hindsight, I didn’t need to run. The exhibition is on until the 8th of June. I was just super excited by these shadows. The creator of the sculptures is Matt Dabrowski, and he is one of twenty-two artists featuring in the Temperature 2: New Queensland Art exhibition at MoB. Here’s a little info about Matt’s sculptures if you’re interested:

Celebrating social and artistic freedom. Matt regards skateboarding as a healthy dose of vitality in our carefully controlled environments. These sculptures represent his resistance to official and corporate control of the appearance and functioning of the city. Matt uses skateboards to represent individual freedom of spirit. Pierced by arrows, they resemble hunting trophies or tribal artefacts. Because of the ideas they represent, his skateboards are literally targets. The arrows used here were fletched (feathered) with the advice of Cliff Turpin, a weapons advisor to the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

I've recently been tagged with the random photo folder thingie by Gina from Gingerbread and Terri from Ways I See The World. I'm going to cheat here. What a surprise eh? I decided it would be nicer instead to post two more shadow photos. These shots are from participants from last week that didn't add their links in time to Mr Linky, so missed out on being included in the collages. Hope you don't mind Gina and Terri!

Gertie the Garrett

I recently visited The Workshops Rail Museum in Ipswich. I’ve never really been interested in such things as heritage rail machinery and locomotives, and visiting this museum didn’t change my feelings about the subject. That’s not to say that the museum isn’t good. It's good. It’s an award winning and very popular attraction. Just not my cup of tea. I thought it might be an interesting location to take some TtV photos. It wasn’t. I did manage to take a couple of photos. I would like to introduce you to ol' Gertie the Garrett.

I liked how these ones turned out. This was my very first time playing around with my newly acquired ‘dirty lens’ Argus 75 camera. I'll be listing these and a few other photos in my shop in the next day or two. There very well may be a rail enthusiast out there who'd be keen to snap up a TtV print of a circa 1914 Garrett Steam Traction Engine. Just maybe. It's a crazy world! Hey, I'm bloggin' about Traction Engines!

The beginning of my week was met with a very sweet surprise on Monday. I won a giveaway that the awesome Ali was running on her Charlie and Grace blog. Look at the cutie that I was lucky enough to win!

This is April Bear. Isn't she adorable? The winner (me me me!) was entitled to choose a fave Little Jelly from Ali's Etsy shop, and I chose April. It was a difficult decision to make as they're all so lovely. Many of the designs are inspired by drawings made by Ali's little boy. They sure make a dynamic duo! Currently Ali is donating 50% of all sales from Little Jellygnite to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal. So it's a great time to snap up one (or more!) of her Little Jellies for a very worthy cause. Onya Ali and thanks so much! xo

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #39

I stumbled upon this cool little metal dragonfly sculpture and his sweet shadow during a visit to the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mt Coot-tha earlier in the week. There were also a lot of real dragonflies present on the day, but I wasn’t quick enough to catch any of their shadows. Those critters move really really fast! Did you know that dragonflies can fly forwards, backwards and sideways? Dragonflies also have three eyes! I think they do anyway. I could be mistaken, so don’t quote me on the eye count thing.

Happy Sunday!

Fucked-Up Fires...

Victorian bushfires have killed 181 people according to the lastest death toll at the time of typing this.

The death toll from the bushfires is certain to rise further. Victorian Premier John Brumby has vowed to rebuild the razed communites, but as the toll mounts the grim fates of many residents are becoming clearer. Thirty-five people died in Kinglake alone, while 22 deaths had been confirmed in St Andrews out of a population of just 1500. Strathewen, with only 200 people prior to the bushfires, had lost 30 residents in the last official count. Fire fighters dubbed the tiny town the "Valley of Death". A bridge out of town was damaged, leaving those still there as the firestorm swept through with little chance of survival. Three bodies were found crowded in a bath. The victims may have hoped the water would save them but instead it would have boiled in the intense heat - excerpt from the news.com.au website

The Australian Red Cross have set up the Victorian Bushfire Appeal and are accepting donations. Please click here if you are able make a financial contribution to assist the victims of these horrific bushfires.

I have decided to disable the comments on this post. I'm hoping that the lovely folk who do visit my blog and wish to leave comments will instead click here to leave a thoughtful little message of support for the brave firefighters. Many of them are volunteers, risking their own lives to saves others. Thankyou xox

With over 50 participants last Sunday, that was a lot of collaging! I'm seeing shadows in my sleep...hehe

Here's my Shadow Shot(s) Sunday #38

The second shadow shot is of the Arbour that weaves through the centre of Southbank Parklands for approximately one kilometre. It’s made up of hundreds of curling steel columns, each covered with vibrant magenta bougainvillea plants. This scenic walkway is the defining symbol of Southbank, and the Arbour was designed in such a way that it also functions as an art gallery, with exhibitions hung from the columns for special events and festivals. It’s a very pretty walk. With pretty shadows all along the way.

Happy Sunday!

Heart Show Art Show

It was almost one year ago that I had my very first exhibition at Pandemonium Café and I’ve been exhibiting my artwork there ever since. The owner kindly offered me a permanent wall space to do with what I please. It was a lucky break and a wonderful opportunity that Ive been really grateful for. Now I have an opportunity to also participate in a very worthy charity event that Pandemonium Café are hosting next month. Currently I’m working on a few pieces to donate to the Heart Show Art Show fundraiser. I'm looking forward to checking out the other art that will be there! But hey, if you can’t make it along on the night you can always go check out my current exhibit there called “Peace. Is the Harvest of Love. Birds.”

About the Heart Show Art Show:

Variety Queensland, a children's charity which supports disadvantaged children will be holding their inaugural Heart Show Art Show fundraising event at Pandemonium Café in Paddington at 7.00pm on Friday 6th March. Art enthusiasts will be treated to delicious tasty treats and funky DJ beats at the 70s retro style café. There will be a cheap cash bar available and the opportunity to get creative by spraying, painting, chalking, drawing, stencilling and decorating the Pandemonium Café car park walls in old school street style fashion! What fun! Entry to the exhibition is $15 and all art will be available to buy for a small cost of $25, with all of the proceeds from the sales of the donated artworks going to Variety Queensland.

Places are strictly limited, so to book, please phone Sarah at Variety Qld on 3368 3321 or email Sarah.

Here's my Shadow Shot(s) Sunday #37

These shadow shots are following on from the public art sculpture themed shots of last Sunday. The big metal balls (there's 15 in total), called Steam, were created by artist Donna Marcus and are located in Reddacliff Place (just a hop, skip and a jump away from the City Roos of last week). They are made from thousands of copies of World War II steamers welded to spheres, the same pattern as a soccer ball, ranging in size from 1.3m to 2.6m wide. Filled with coloured florescent lights, they are a stunning sight to see at night. I’ll take some night shots of them next time for a future blog post. The artist says that the sculptures weren’t yet finished because her original concept was to have a mist coming out of the spheres to turn them into water features. The on-going water restrictions here in Brisbane have put a hold on those plans.

Apologies to those few shadow shooters who were too late to enter their links in Mr Linky last week. The Mr Linky now stops accepting links on Tuesday Australian time, then all added urls are immediately converted to permanent html links to remain displayed on the post they were added to. Mr Linky accepts links for a period of 48 hours and I guarantee that Sunday falls within that timeframe, regardless of what part of the world you live in. Of course there is always the chance of the Mr Linky hosting site experiencing difficulties during this time and the Mr Linky not always appearing as he should. I have no control over this happening I’m afraid. Hope this all works in with people. I am truly sorry if it doesn’t. Also, if your shadow shot from last week isn't appearing in a collage it will be due to it not being a jpeg image. I'm only able to include jpgs in the collages. I may not have mentioned that previously, so I'm sorry about that.

I received two cool blog awards this week. I am so very lucky! This first one is from the lovely Gina from The Pagan Sphinx. Gina also has a super photo blog called The Pagan's Eye. If I was asked to pick a favourite of the two blogs I couldn't because they're both brilliant for different reasons. Thanks Gina!

This one is from my good buddy Lisa of Lisa’s RetroStyle. I've been a fan of Lisa's blog for ages now and I've always appreciated Lisa's crazy sense of humour. Funny retro girl always makes me laugh. Thanks Lisa!

Thanks so much to both of you! I’m touched and very grateful, as I’m a big fan of your blogs and have also enjoyed your regular participation in SSS. As have many others! I hope that it’s ok with you both that I pass this award along to shadow shooters because I know that you both enjoy all the wonderful shadow shots as much as I do. So, shadow shooters, past & present participants, please accept these awards from three of your fellow shadow shooters, Gina, Lisa and myself. The awards do come with rules, so if you’re not an ole’ stick in the mud type like myself and would like to have some fun playing along with the questions then please do. The info for Gina’s award can be found here. The info for Lisa’s award can be found here. Or simply accept them as no-obligation awards given to you because we love your blogs. Geez, I sure hope this is all ok with Gina and Lisa. If not, at least I live on the other side of the world and far enough away for either of you to be giving me a kick in the butt for doing the wrong thing…hehe.

Believe it or not, I always have the intention of keeping the waffling to a minimum on these SSS posts. Ha!
