It felt extremely weird collaging less than half of the shadow shots posted last week. The urge to include all of them was strong, but I resisted the urge and stopped at twenty-seven photos. It did save a lot of time. The plan is to mix it up each time and not use shadow shots by the same participants every week. If you happen to notice that I've not included a photo by you for a while and you would like me to, please feel free to let me know because I am not a very organised kind of a person and may lose track. A simple message saying something like "hey doofus it's about time you included one of my shots!" will be fine.

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #45



I cannot claim the first photo as my own shadow shot. I took a photo of a photo. I cheated. The original photo was taken by Anton Corbijn, titled 'Nick Cave, London, 1999' and can be found at the Nick Cave exhibition that I blogged about in my previous post. The second one is of my desk in my studio. By studio I'm referring to my junk-filled closet-sized spare room. By desk I'm referring to a big door balancing on a couple of dodgy old wooden trestles. I'm all class! The late afternoon autumn sun shining through the curtains cast pretty patterns and some nice paint bottle shadows on my desk-door-trestle-table-thingie.

Nick Cave at QPAC. Hooray!

Nick Cave: The Exhibition. Finally it's here! I heard about this exhibition happening in Melbourne last year and I've been waiting patiently for it to arrive in Brisbane. It arrived to QPAC and opened yesterday in QPAC's Tony Gould gallery space. I was there before the doors had even opened. Yeah I know I'm kind of tragic. But hey I wasn't the only one! The exhibition explores “behind the scenes” of iconic Australian musician, songwriter, artist, author Nick Cave. It features displays of original lyrics, notebooks, diaries, artwork, photography, and rare and previously unreleased film footage. A couple of the highlights include the original manuscript of Nick Cave’s book, And The Ass Saw The Angel, and the selection of flyers, fanzines and posters dating back from the late 1970s to the present. This touring exhibition is drawn from over 800 items generously donated by Nick Cave to the Performing Arts Collection. It’s brilliant! It’s free admission! And I highly recommend it! Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #44



Some shadowy tree reflections I spotted in the window of a building somewhere in South Brisbane. These trees look a little bit sad to me. I get the feeling that they’d prefer to be growing someplace else. I could be wrong. They may be perfectly happy where they are. I hope so. I’ll try to imagine them as being happy.

This Sunday is the last time that I’ve included ALL shadow shots in the collages. It’s becoming a little bit difficult for me lately to compile the collages using everyone’s photos each week. I am still very keen to continue making some collages, but I’ve decided from now on I’ll create only three collages (I'm thinking three of the nine picture ones) every week using a selection of the shadow shots from participants. I may choose shadows based on a theme (if I notice one occurring), or I’ll select ones that I think will look nice together, or I’ll simply randomly select them. It will just be whatever happens to work out each week. And it will be fun! A change is good right? Anyway, I do really appreciate you all for playing along, and while compiling collages of all the photos has been a bit of a struggle, it has in no way dampened my enthusiasm for looking at all of the wonderful shadows! So keep ‘em coming! You shadow shooters rock! You truly do.

Happy Harmony Day!

Harmony Day is on the 21st of March each year. It is a day for celebrating and promoting the benefits of cultural diversity. The key message of Harmony Day is Everyone Belongs. It’s about community participation, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everybody. Since Harmony Day began ten years ago, thousands of schools, community groups, organisations and various businesses, large and small, across Australia have actively supported this day of celebration by hosting Harmony Day events.


A very happy Harmony Day everybody! But hey, let’s not restrict the celebrations to only one single day per year. Let us all celebrate community harmony EVERYDAY! Yes, Everyone Belongs Everyday.

The process of creating these collages this week was a lot more random than usual. I was a little rushed for time. I think the individual photos shine above the mish-mashy randomness of the groupings anyway. Thanks to all the shadow shooters for participating. Apologies to both Long Island Daily Photo and Musings From The Pond for your photos not appearing in the collages. Unfortunately I was unable to include your shadow shots due to the photos being PNG images. The editing program I use to create the collages will not recognise PNG images. I can only collage JPEG images. I may not have mentioned this before. If I haven't mentioned it before...oops! So thought I'd better mention it now for future reference.

A couple from my shadow archives taken recently at Roma Street Parklands. I’m glad I have a few shadow shots saved because we’ve had miserable weather this week in Brisbane due to cyclone Hamish further up north. Overcast and wet for much of the week. Coincidentally I’m off to Roma Street Parklands today for a BrisStyle meet-up at the Melange Café. Today marks our first anniversary as an official Etsy Team, so it should be a fun celebration. Happy birthday BrisStyle! One year old today and a good excuse to eat cake!

Another Pelican Post...

The other week I posted a pelican photo for Shadow Shot Sunday and it wasn’t the only pelican photo I took on the day. I actually took many photos but I’ll refrain from posting all of them and just share my favourite four. I took a few pelican photos last October and was really keen to go back to the same location to try shooting some pelicans TtV style. So I did. And I'm so glad I did because it was a whole lot of fun!





I’ve just listed these four in my Etsy shop, along with a couple of other photos that don’t contain birds of any kind. I seem to be on a bit of a bird craze at the moment. Water birds in particular. And to further fuel my water bird obsession I won a very cool duck brooch last week from fellow BrisStyle member Hayley.

The side of a house located in the Valley. Or in New Farm. I can't recall how far along James Street it was. Do you notice anything odd about this house? The oddness created a more diverse display of shadows.

Masters of Photography

I stopped in at my favourite Brisbane bookshop, Folio Books the other day looking for a gift for a friend. I always visit Folio first when I decide to buy a book as a gift and I always walk out of Folio with an armful of books for myself, and none for the intended gift recipient. I have very little self control when it comes to books. One of the books I bought is called Masters of Photography – classic photographic artists of our time (it was at least on special…) and flicking through it I noticed many wonderful shadow shots. So being obsessed with shadow photos and books, I thought I'd share a few of my favourite shadowy images from some of the photographers featured in this publication. Hope you enjoy these as much as I do.

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #41


This obliging pelican happily posed for me early this week. The photo looks like it was taken at a train station and the pelican is standing on the platform waiting to board the train. Well that’s what came to mind when I uploaded the photo to my computer. I took this shot at Bretts Wharf in Hamilton and the structure behind the pelican isn’t really a train but a restaurant. The pelican is waiting for restaurant staff to come outside with a bucket of fish scraps, as they regularly do every afternoon for their pelican pals. While this is most definitely a pelican, his short and stumpy shadow looks very much like a penguin!
